Francois Ferrero

Biographic sketch

François Ferrero, MD, is Honorary Professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He was trained in psychiatry and psychotherapy in Geneva, Paris and in the USA.  He has served as Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland (1994-1996), and Geneva (2000-2007), Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Director of the WHO Collaborative Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health.

He was the Principal Investigator of major studies on schizophrenia and bipolar disorders funded continuously by the Swiss National Science Foundation between 1985 and 2011. He authored 5 books, including Pharmacothérapie des troubles bipolaires , 2004 (with Jean-Michel Aubry and Nicolas Schaad),  with German edition (Huber, 2006) and English edition, Pharmacotherapy of Bipolar Disorders (Wiley, 2007) ; Traitements psychologiques des troubles bipolaires, 2009 (with Jean-Michel Aubry), and Psychopharmacologie des troubles bipolaires, 2013 (with Jean-Michel Aubry and Nicolas Schaad).

Currently, he is active in private practice and is a Member of the Administrative Council of the University Psychiatric Clinics of Basel, Switzerland and President of the Training and Research Committee. He is also active in various Foundations and Associations, including the World Psychiatric Association (Honorary fellow and Member of Finance Committee), the European Association of Social Psychiatry (Founding member), the Foundation for the Geneva Prize for Human Rights in Psychiatry (President), the Swiss-Rwanda Association for Mental Health (Founding member), and the University of Seniors (Uni3), Geneva (Board Member).

He has published more than 250 articles in scientific journals.
